The weekend has come and gone and with that, there are no more undefeated teams, a second award for a Padre slugger and a whole lot of wind. The NFL had a very up and down and in one way sideways type of day. The Falcons finally lost and somewhere, the '72 Dolphins popped their champagne leaving them the only team still to go undefeated throughout an entire season. Sorry New England, you went 18-1. College football's Alabama also lost it's undefeated streak. Johnny Football for heisman?? The Ravens put up a whopping 55 points against (insert Chris Berman voice) THE RAIDERS. There was also a tie. The "great" NFC West produced a tie between the San Francisco 49ers and the St Louis Rams. Kicking troubles by both teams led to the game ending in a wash. Now onto the SoCal sports.
CHARGERS
We lost, again to the Buccaneers 34-24. Can't say I did not see this coming. An east coast trip against an offense that has scored at will recently just spelled doom for the Bolts. Our secondary just can't stop anyone but it is not their fault alone. Our much improved pass rush is non existent. Every team in the league knocks down the other quarterback at least 5 times a game. That just does not happen with the Chargers. I don't know why, but in order to be a playoff team, the defense must be at least stout at all phases of the game and not just rush defense. The offense on the other hand, was a tale of two halves. Philip Rivers was having a second straight game of his life until... he threw one of the worst interceptions I have ever seen. Rivers rolled to his right and was on the verge of walking out of bounds when he threw a ball about 12 yards directly to an awaiting Buccaneers player who then went on to score a touchdown thus ending any momentum the Chargers had. Rivers threw another bad interception under-throwing a Chargers receiver by about 10 yards. A great day ended terribly. Our special teams who all season was playing at a high level gave up a blocked punt which led to a touchdown. An unacceptable game on all fronts led to a meltdown by Norv Turner which you can check out the link here. The Chargers played pathetic and maybe they are not as good as we thought they were. Here's hoping that Chip Kelly, Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher is interested in our team to take the reigns and lead us to dominance, or at least back to the playoffs.
AZTECS
The mens basketball Aztecs lost to the Syracuse Orange on the Midway in a game that Chicago would be jealous of. The windy city hovered over the retired carrier and shooting was awful. The Aztecs could not hit consecutive free throws and were constantly missing three pointers by two or three feet. It was a mess. They also could not keep up with the 2-3 zone as well as the length of the Orange. Rahon was the start of the Aztecs and he came off the bench to hit buckets late and sparked the offense. You can't look at this game as an embarrassing defeat. This was an event and in different circumstances the Aztecs as well as Syracuse would have played a much more even and competitive game. They will be fine.
The football team is 8-3. What? They have become dominant and continued the trend this past Saturday beating Air Force behind another solid ground game. This team is Bowl eligible and will likely play in either the Las Vegas bowl or the Pointsettia Bowl here in San Diego. They take on Wyoming next Saturday.
PADRES
The Padres best player, Chase Headley racked up another award winning the National League Silver Slugger for being the best hitting third baseman in the league. His other award was winning the Gold Glove for his defense at third base. Congrats to you Headley.
-There is still not much update on Padres free agency acquisitions. SP Dan Haren might be the Padres best bet as well as a right fielder that can play everyday.
Other sports
The Lakers did not hire Phil Jackson but instead hired former Knicks head coach Mike D'antoni. HAHA. That's all I can say being a Sacramento Kings fan.
Dodgeball playoffs are here and in my opinion the winner of NO NO NO vs Team Barnhardt will win the league championship.
