Welcome to free agency

Free agency started today in the National Football League and the San Diego Chargers finished the day strong.

The Chargers added to what is already an explosive offense by signing former Colts running back Donald Brown to a three-year deal worth $10.5 million. Brown played 66 games for Indianapolis in his five-year stint and rushed for 2,337 yards, scoring 17 touchdowns.

Brown is a perfect fit to join running backs Danny Woodhead and Ryan Mathews because he is a capable runner and is arguably coming off of his best season as a pro. The former first-round pick split time in 2013 with former Cleveland Brown, Trent Richardson.

Richardson struggled and Brown became the clear feature back for the Colts. With the addition of Brown, the Chargers now have a trio that resembles the combination of LaDanian Tomlinson, Michael Turner and Darren Sproles.

Mathews, who solidified his spot as the feature back in 2013, became the player the Chargers thought they drafted as he rushed for a career-high 1,255 yards. Mathews and Woodhead constantly put pressure on opposing defenses with their pass-catching ability and with Brown in the mix, defenses will now have to game plan for three running backs all capable of being starters.

The Brown comes in at a time when the rival Denver Broncos signed defensive stars, cornerback Aqib Talib and pro bowl safety T.J. Ward. The Broncos are also the favorites to add former Cowboy star outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

That type of haul has required AFC West teams to get better offensively and by signing Brown, the Chargers have done that. Expect Brown to be an important part of the Chargers offense this season.
